A common Zen practice is chanting that is an excellent mediation technique which is especially useful for times of distraction and can be done anywhere and anytime. Common chants include major scriptures such as the Heart Sutra, mantras, and the names of Buddhas. Chanting usually centres on major Buddhist luminaries such as like Kwanseum Bosal (Avalokiteśvara) and chanting can be also seen as a means to connect with the ideas these being represent. For example, Kwanseum Bosal is a being who represents compassion.
